It didn’t take long for those around her to realize what a natural talent Kat possessed in the art of baking. It was actually coworkers (otherwise known as taste testers) that pushed her to open her own bake shop! What started as a passion for art and science blossomed into a full blown love affair with custom sweets. She works to incorporate a number of sugary styles of baking into her ever evolving menu and they are not to be missed!
When did you start baking and who did you learn your skills from?
Over the years I have had fun making desserts for friends and family, but never considered a career in baking. Only recently did I discover my passion (last spring), and I felt driven to perfect my designs. I am self taught and it was the people around me that encouraged me to believe my product was good enough to start a business. At first I laughed at the idea because I had zero knowledge about how to start and manage a business, but as more and more people raved about my desserts I realized that I have what it takes to succeed. The more I learned about the food industry the more I felt driven to keep going. I discovered how happy not only baking makes me, but also being my own boss. I am proud of what Cakes By Kat Bake Shop has accomplished these past nine months!
When did you decide to jump in and make a business out of your talents?
I have always enjoyed baking as a hobby, but last March I made a birthday cake for my boyfriend and it did not turn out even close to what I had envisioned, so I decided to continue practicing. I brought my desserts to work and my coworkers are the ones who encouraged me to start a business. I did not know the first thing about opening a company, but with support from my friends, family and coworkers...and A LOT of research, I opened Cakes By Kat LLC in May.
What is your favorite item “on the menu”?
Picking my favorite is so difficult! I absolutely love everything I bake, but my go-to desserts are my signature sugar cookies, and my pumpkin cake with cream cheese buttercream.
How much time, on average, do you spend on completing a wedding cake?
I spend multiple days baking, filling, stacking, and decorating a wedding cake. My single tier 2 layer chocolate cake covered in buttercream flowers took 8 hours. I hand piped each flower individually and then assembled them onto the cake. (photo can be found on my instagram)
Would you ever do a televised baking competition? (Think Food Network, Baking Championships, Cake Wars) What color apron would you choose?
I think it would be fun to attend a baking competition! I would be thrilled and honored to attend the Food Network Christmas Cookie Challenge! It would definitely be a learning experience, but I love a good competition. I would pick either light pink or brown because those are our logo colors. If those are not options I would choose black to keep things simple and sophisticated.
If you could only pick one order/cake/creation as your favorite of all time, what would it be?
If I had to pick just one, I would say my hand painted floral watercolor cake. It was my first time painting watercolor and I am so proud of how it turned out!
Do you bake your very own birthday cake? If not, who do you trust to do it?
I do not make my own cake because I have more fun baking for others. I did not have a birthday cake last year, I prefer to treat myself with a nice dinner out followed by Jeni's cream puff ice cream!
Have you/do you like to/are you ever looking to work with other local and small businesses?
I love collaborating with local small businesses! I have a few things lined up and a few things in the works ;) I participate in styled photo shoots with a variety of local artists and we will be published in Southern Celebrations this February! We will be hosting a pop up shop at Powell Village Winery on 01/30 and 2/13 from 6-8pm. Stay tuned for event updates with a few local wineries and breweries! Also, I look forward to collaborating with The Cheesecake Girl! This summer you can find Cakes By Kat Bake Shop at the Westerville and Upper Arlington Farmer's Markets, and soon we will have our product stocked at The Hills Market downtown! (date TBD). For event updates we recommend joining our email list and checking our events page here https://www.cakesbykatbakeshop.com/events/.
Who is in your “Girl Gang” and/or who would you add to your dream Girl Gang?
I am a member with Haven Collective and love getting to know all of their entrepreneurs. I am also a member of Boss Babes Columbus and have met wonderful women! My dream Girl Gang would include anyone who supports equality, female empowerment, and advocates for the LGBTQ community. I want everyone to know that at Cakes By Kat Bake Shop love is love and we are proud members of the LGBTQ community.
